Supporting Kids with Cancer
STORY-TELLING BEADS
are EARNED LIKE MILITARY MEDALS or SCOUT PATCHES
Matched by a grant from Rotary District 7930, we kick-started a new inventory of story–telling BEADS. They’re available on the cancer and bone marrow transplant units at the hospital. Including a ‘Bright Happy Power’ bead to encourage some optimism.
CHILDLIFE PROJECTS:
•Providing portable laptop computers and DVD players for patient families
•Providing therapeutic interactive games which promote physical and emotional rehabilitation
•Providing books and movies for the unit’s library
•Hosting seasonal social events such as ice cream socials or holiday parties in the resource room to create a sense of community
•Providing child life supplies such as crafts and activities
•Editing and contributing to the ‘Faces of Hope’ book (stories and portraits of childhood cancer patients published by Childrens Hospital Boston) which is distributed to newly diagnosed pediatric cancer families
BRODIE is a neighbor from Essex, recently diagnosed with leukemia. In our hometown, several cancer survivors are attending public school or recently graduated. One child (4-yr-old Charlotte) is currently on active treatment at Mass General for AML.
STANLEY is one of about 180 pediatric cancer patients enrolled in the B.E.A.D.S. program.
With the contributions of many sponsors, we are undertaking childlife projects at Children’s Hospital Boston and Dana Farber’s Jimmy Fund Clinic where Jessie was also a patient for 6 years. We have also begun service to patients at Mass General Hospital. (Check out the resources page for many other suggestions on how to help children and families living with cancer or life-limiting illnesses.)
